Randall Ricketts, age 58, of Foxborough, died on Monday, Aug. 29 after a three-car hit-and-run crash on Route 95 north near Exit 7 in North Attleborough, according to the Massachusetts State Police. Joseph Pompei Jr., age 50, of Cranston, Rhode Island, was later arrested in relation to the crash, police said in an update.

The tragedy was initiated before 4:15 p.m. by a crash between a 2006 Buick LaCrosse, driven by Pompei, and a late-model Cadillac Escalade, driven by a 61-year-old man from Providence, Rhode Island. The two vehicles collided and the driver of the Cadillac lost control of his vehicle, drove through the median, and crashed into a 2015 Jaguar XJ, driven by Ricketts, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

Pompei, the driver of the Buick, initially stopped but then sped away from the scene.

The Cadillac's driver suffered life-threatening injuries and remains in critical condition at Rhode Island Hospital.

The Buick was found in Attleborough and Pompei was detained and later arrested.

Pompei was charged with the following offenses:

  • Motor vehicle homicide by negligent operation
  • Leaving the scene of a crash
  • Causing fatal injuries
  • Other offenses relating to the hit-and-run

Pompei's arraignment was scheduled for Tuesday morning.

The crash is under investigation by the Massachusetts State Police and Bristol County State Police.
